CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has
directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to submit within two
weeks, a detailed report with regard to the violent incidents at the
Dr Ambedkar Law College on November 12.


A full Bench of the SHRC headed by Justice AS Venkatachalamoorthy,
taking suomotu action on the reports of The New Indian Express and
other newspapers on Thursday, also directed the Commissioner of Police
to appear before it and submit a report with regard to the incident
within two weeks.

Meanwhile, the Controller of Examinations of the Tamil Nadu Dr
Ambedkar Law University announced that the law examinations at all
centres stood postponed until further orders.

Meanwhile, the First Bench of the Madras High Court has suggested the
print and electronic media to act under selfrestraint.

"In order to prevent further deterioration of law and order and to
maintain balance and normalcy over the whole incident, this court
expects that both the press and lectronic media will act under
self-restraint and will publish the incident or show the same in such
a manner not to further aggravate the situation." After satisfying
itself that the cops had been either suspended or transferred, the
Bench observed that it could not be said that the government had not
taken any steps in the matter.
