Par Panel chides BSNL for no SC/ST representation on board

New Delhi, Feb 26 : A Parliamentary panel has lashed out at BSNL for
not having any representation from SC/ST on company's board and asked
the telecom major to scout for eligible candidates from this category
for appointments to the Board.

The Parliamentary Committee on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and
Scheduled Tribes which was tabled today said, "The Committee regrets
to note that there is no representation of SC/ST members on the Board
of Directors of BSNL even though it was admitted that there is no
prohibition of their being considered for the Board level appointments
as per the guidelines." "BSNL, is a very large organisation with a
staff strength of around 3.10 lakh, out of which 70,000 employees are
reported to be from the SC and ST categories. The Committe therefore
feels that an SC/ST member should have been appointed on the Board,"
it said.

The selection and appointment of the Board members is done by the
Government of India through the Public Enterprises Selection Board
(PSEB).

The Committee said as of now, no SC/ST candidate has found favour with
the PSEB but hoped that this would change in the future.
