MRPS attacks Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderabad

Staff Reporter

Abortive attempt to set fire to the building

DAMAGE CONTROL: A fireman at the Gandhi Bhavan after the MRPS attack
in Hyderabad on Saturday evening.

HYDERABAD: The SC reservation categorisation agitation took an
extremely militant turn when Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti (MRPS)
activists made an abortive bid to set fire to Gandhi Bhavan on
Saturday evening. Three MRPS activists, one Special Police Officer and
one Gandhi Bhavan staffer sustained burns as they grappled with each
other. There was not much damage to the building, the headquarters of
the State Congress, as only some furniture at the reception counter
was burnt.

The condition of two MRPS agitators, Surendar Madiga and Damodar
Madiga, was stated to be critical. They were shifted to DRDO Apollo
Hospital at Kanchenbagh. Tension escalated at the State Congress
headquarters as hundreds of incensed Congress workers rushed there
from AICC president Sonia Gandhi’s public meeting at Parade Grounds.
Police were struggling to control the slogan-shouting agitated
workers.

Strict vigil

A shell-shocked police administration which maintained strict vigil
elsewhere, anticipating trouble in view of MRPS announcement to
disrupt Sonia Gandhi’s meeting, relaxed a bit after some MRPS workers
were arrested at Tank Bund. Apparently, the police focus was more on
preventing disturbance at Parade Grounds.

A police team deployed to protect Gandhi Bhavan was stationed at the
outer gate, while three Special Police Officers (SPOs) were inside the
building.
