Temple panel dissolved for obstructing non-Brahmin priest

Published: June 4,2009

Thiruvananthapuram , Jun 3 The Travancore Deveswom Board (TDB) has
decided to dissolve a temple advisory committee in Kottayam district
for allegedly preventing a non- Brahmin priest from taking over the
temple duties.

The incident took place at Vayappara Temple under the Ettamannur Group
of temples in Kottayam two months back, a TDB release said here today.

The decision to disband the panel was taken by a TDB meeting presided
by Chief Commissioner of Devaswom, K Jayakumar, the release said.

The trained priest was appointed by the Board to take over the
priestly duties of the small temple. However, the temple advisory
committee of the local people objected to the posting and insisted
that a Brahmin be appointed as priest, as was the tradition.

The TDB appointed a committee to inquire into the incident and based
on its report the decision to disband the advisory committee was
taken, the release said.

Meanwhile, the priest was shifted to another temple, it said.
