Brahmin-to-be aims for India 04 Jun 2009 Lunga Biyela TWENTY-one-year-old Niren Chetty has been training to become a Brahmin since the age of 15, and hopes to further his training in Chennai, India. “I’m very excited about going to India,” he said. “There’s a lot of hard work involved and a lot of sacrifices. Being away from home, and giving up small pleasures. My life will be very simple after this. “My only worry is whether it will go well or not. It is an expensive trip,” he said. Chetty said he’s wanted to become a Brahmin since he started going to the temple at the age of 15. “I enjoyed being in the temple. It is a simple way of life …” he said. Chetty, who has three siblings, said he had a very hard upbringing. “The only one I could turn to at the time was God,” he said. “I really owe a lot to him.” Chetty has been to India before. “I went there two years ago for the first initiation into the priesthood,” he said. The former Northbury Park Secondary School pupil has been studying Tamil with the guru Suria Kumari Naidoo since the age of 12. Chetty said his parents are very proud of him. To try and raise funds for Chetty’s trip to India, a cultural evening will be held at the TPA Hall tomorrow night at 7 pm, featuring Magentharen Balakisten and including Bharatha Natyam recitals. Those who wish to purchase tickets to the cultural evening can do so by contacting Chetty at 073 299 8146.
