CHENNAI: Corrupt teachers and indifferent bureaucrats have allegedly
deprived around 9,000 Adi Dravidar students in Tiruvanamalai of their
‘Post-Matric Scholarship’ in the past two years, forcing some of them
to drop out of school and others to struggle to fund their education.

In the case of S Perumal (17) of Athiyanthal village, a teacher
allegedly forged the signature of his father Siva and misappropriated
the money.

“My father died in 2002 but when I was studying in the 11th standard
in 2008, the teacher, Herber Dhana Sundaram in the Danish Mission
Secondary School forged the signature of my father,” Perumal told

For A Chelladurai of the same school, the scholarship never came. He
subsequently failed in the examination.

Chelladurai says poverty prevented him from concentrating solely on
his studies. He was forced to take up a job as a painter. He says he
could have focussed on studies if he had got the scholarship amount of
Rs 1,400 for the 11th standard and Rs 1,540 for the 12th standard.

With students narrating several such accounts, official sources in the
Adi-Dravidar Welfare Department, Tiruvanamalai, claimed that the
Government had released adequate funds, whereas Adi Dravidar and
Tribal Welfare Department Principal Secretary Vishwanath A Shegaonkar
said he was not aware of it at all.
