Mayawati govt comes under attack over Aligarh violence

The state BJP unit today constituted an inquiry committee to look into
the entire issue.SP Shivpal Singh Yadav accused the Mayawati
government of promoting the interests of a select group of
industrialists, at the cost of suffering farmers."Why were the
district officials in such a tearing hurry to acquire agricultural
land belonging to poor farmers on behalf of a private builder?," he
said while addressing the farmers.Shivpal said that "the wider issue
of acquiring farmland has to be addressed now and no small farmer
should be forced to part with his land unless he does so
willingly".Rashtriya Lok Dal President Ajit Singh alleged that Maywati
was "consistently exploiting the farmers in the name of the Expressway
and industrialisation."This is not a matter of 10 or 100 acres of
land.Mayawati has announced that she will take over 2,000 villages,"
Singh, who also addressed the mahapanchayat, said.UP Congress chief
Rita Bahuguna Joshi, who met protesting farmers last evening, today
visited the district jail where some of the leaders of the ongoing
protest are lodged.Joshi today demanded a "time-bound" enquiry by a
sitting High Court judge. She also demanded a compensation of Rs 25
lakh to the families of those killed in police action.Opposing
forcible acquisition of agricultural land, Bahuguna had alleged nexus
between builders and BSP leaders in the state.Rejecting the
allegations, BSP said there is a procedure for giving compensation for
land acquisition which cannot be violated."We are giving even more
than what is due to those farmers whose land would be acquired," BSP
leader S C Mishra said.About the police firing, he said, "There is a
conspiracy behind the violence and that is why we have ordered a
judicial probe. We are also ready for a discussion in the House over
the issue."The farmers have been holding demonstrations for nearly
three weeks near Aligarh demanding compensation at the rate paid to
Noida and Greater Noida farmers. The protests turned violent over the
past two days. The 165 km-long eight-lane expressway is aimed at
reducing driving time between New Delhi and Agra drastically.PTI TEAM
