Mayawati govt comes under attack over Aligarh violence PTI The state BJP unit today constituted an inquiry committee to look into the entire issue.SP Shivpal Singh Yadav accused the Mayawati government of promoting the interests of a select group of industrialists, at the cost of suffering farmers."Why were the district officials in such a tearing hurry to acquire agricultural land belonging to poor farmers on behalf of a private builder?," he said while addressing the farmers.Shivpal said that "the wider issue of acquiring farmland has to be addressed now and no small farmer should be forced to part with his land unless he does so willingly".Rashtriya Lok Dal President Ajit Singh alleged that Maywati was "consistently exploiting the farmers in the name of the Expressway and industrialisation."This is not a matter of 10 or 100 acres of land.Mayawati has announced that she will take over 2,000 villages," Singh, who also addressed the mahapanchayat, said.UP Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi, who met protesting farmers last evening, today visited the district jail where some of the leaders of the ongoing protest are lodged.Joshi today demanded a "time-bound" enquiry by a sitting High Court judge.She also demanded a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the families of those killed in police action.Opposing forcible acquisition of agricultural land, Bahuguna had alleged nexus between builders and BSP leaders in the state.Rejecting the allegations, BSP said there is a procedure for giving compensation for land acquisition which cannot be violated."We are giving even more than what is due to those farmers whose land would be acquired," BSP leader S C Mishra said.About the police firing, he said, "There is a conspiracy behind the violence and that is why we have ordered a judicial probe. We are also ready for a discussion in the House over the issue."The farmers have been holding demonstrations for nearly three weeks near Aligarh demanding compensation at the rate paid to Noida and Greater Noida farmers. The protests turned violent over the past two days. The 165 km-long eight-lane expressway is aimed at reducing driving time between New Delhi and Agra drastically.PTI TEAM rt SC
