TRAINING: TOL Summer 2005 Foreign Correspondent Training Course

TOL Summer 2005 Foreign Correspondent Training Course
July 16- 30, 2005; Prague, Czech Republic

Transitions Online (TOL)-the leading Internet newsmagazine covering
Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and the former Soviet
Union-will be presenting a summer course designed to prepare college
and university students for a career in international journalism.

Unlike many other journalism courses, TOL's instruction will offer
much more than theory. Our speakers will provide concrete examples
drawn from years of experience in both Central and Eastern Europe and
elsewhere. Lecturers and TOL staff members who have worked for CNN,
the Boston Globe, MSNBC, The Economist, Reuters, Radio Free
Europe/Radio Liberty, and the BBC will talk about how they got their
start and the lessons they've learned working in print, broadcast,
and Internet journalism. During the second week, you'll tackle a
reporting assignment in Prague. You will be assigned to cover a story
and will spend two to three days reporting and writing your article.
Course trainers will treat participant stories as professional
submissions and will offer constructive criticism-on subject matter,
sources, and story structure. The best articles will be published on
TOL's website and the posted link offered to foreign editors
throughout the world via our syndication system.

TOL is also offering additional journalism opportunities after the
course ends, including Prague-based internships and the chance to go
on assignment with a TOL correspondent abroad and report a feature
story, in a country of your choice.

Participants will hail from several countries and offer an
international mix of views on the media and foreign affairs,
providing you the chance to form lifelong friendships and make
professional contacts with people who are heading toward careers as
journalists in the world's most newsworthy places.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. Scholarships may be
available, though preference will be given to citizens of Central and
Eastern Europe.
