i have been reading almost all the articles...however, this piece on somalia in particular, seems to have evoked certain emotions which came about while i was studying Clifford Geertz's article on primordialism, a few months ago.
the situation in somalia clearly depicts the failure of this country to mature into civil politics leaving behind a thriving tribalism which feasts on parochialism and draws its sustenance from its vested interests cloaked in the guise of supposed clan protection or loyalty. lack of democracy, strong institutions and educational centres has robbed the country of the most essential ingrediants needed for creating a strong nation instead what is flourishing is warlordism where clashing intersts which deal with race, region, language, culture are the grounds of bloody conflict. as far as the interest of the international community is concerned, the UN's intervention is kind of obligation. i feel so because most of the fund to the UN comes from the US and other developed nations, accordingly these nations steer the boat where the stakes are high!.And as for the countries themselves, the US has already had an experience here. So end of the day, Somalia becomes a perfectt haven for terrorist networks and drug traffickers. it should be the responsibility of non government organisations across the globe to empower the ppl of Somalia with incentives to gradually understand the processes of nation building to ever hope to become a nation themselves.
