Hello all,

Since I don't live anywhere near Delhi to attend the meet, I was wondering if some of the members of this group who would be attending would ask the following questions on my behalf and share the responses with the list?

Here goes

1) Last year, we had a RAW official defect to the CIA with classified documents and we had UAVs patrol the Kalpakkam nuclear plant. On what basis do claim this treaty as path breaking?

2) As far as nuclear co-operation goes, are do we really wish to be proved as suckers on the world stage? First it was the outdated F-16s which we fought with Pakistan to buy ( to help save Lockheed Martin which was going down financially) and now we actually need to pay US companies to set up civilian nuclear powerplants? Are we really dumb enough to roll out the welcome carpet for the US to visit our power plants while they are trying their best using UAVs.

Also, what the US has acknowledged is not something that is new -- we don''t proliferate  and yeah we are a big country and need energy security( wow -- quite an admission) -- heck we can't afford to do what Pakistan or China or even the US is doing simply because we don't have any policy as far as our nuclear or terrorist policy goes.

3) What was the pats on the the back by Indian side all about anyway? What did we really achieve?  What is the media so euphoric about?

4) Surely, three things to anyone who was watching the meet and the joint press conference  would have been clear

a) The US govt. is not about to support us if we ask for worldwide nuclear disarmament -- that would be a laugh considering the PM can't even get it to support our permanent seat bid. Oops, did I forget, Japan has a nuclear energy program without US co-operation.

b) Whatever happened to the multi -polar world the media was talking about -- sure we had various scenarios  China-Russia-India , then it was India-Brazil-South Africa- Russia, now it is US -India vs China-Pakistan -- Please can we stop.

c) Israel did to the US what US did to India as far as agent and information snatching was concerned.

5) Btw, if anyone thinks -- okay I'm a pessimist /cynic-- we are on a level playing field here in our relationship with the US -- think again. And India though this tie up maybe able to convince the world to disarm , sorry folks we need a global people movement for that and even then it might take at least another 60 years before we can convince the military-industrial complex to give up their profits.

6) But why is the Left parties so mad with the PM is beyond me. What has the PM actually accomplished is have a joint press conference and address the joint houses of the US Senate-congress -- something Musharaff managed long time back. Okay civilian nuclear cooperation which we had with Russia and now we will dole it out to the US. Is this something to get mad about. I wish the Left or the Opposition had the guts or the knowledge to say they are angry that  the PM  went ahead and signed a strategic deal with the US, so close on the heals of the CIA intelligence coup but hey -- they don't seem to be even realise that.

Regards,
Deepa
