RNA to run 10 mobile FM stations
KHIM GHALE
KATHMANDU, March 1 - The Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) has sought permission from the Ministry of Information and Communications (MoIC) to operate 10 mobile FM stations across the country "to counter Maoist propaganda".
According to a highly placed security official, the RNA is planning to operate four FM stations with the capacity of one kilowatt and six others with the capacity of 250 watt.
A meeting of the Central Security Committee chaired by Chief of the Army Staff (CoAS), Pyar Jung Thapa, on June 24 had taken the decision.
The RNA claimed that the Maoists have been making propaganda through their mobile FM stations all over the country.
The source also said that the MoIC has exempted license charge for the RNA's mobile FM stations. The license charge for an FM station of over 500 watt is Rs 500,000 and for a 250 watt FM station it is Rs 100,000.
The government has also exempted customs duty for the RNA on FM equipment imports.
However, RNA spokesperson Nepal Bhusan Chand said that he was unaware of the RNA's decision to run FM stations. "It's not in my knowledge," adding,"This will not materialize so soon."
RNA has so far been running its radio programmes two times a week through Radio Nepal, focussing on its daily activities and disseminating information against terrorism.
The RNA has also been operating a Television programme through Nepal Television entitled "One must give it, the soil does not ask for it" once a week, which is also centered at disseminating information against terrorism in the country.
