Thursday, June 8, 2006
A group of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists forcefully entered Dhaka University Journalists' Association (DUJA) office yesterday to foil a press conference called by one of their fellow female leaders.
They also misbehaved with the journalists present there.
The BCL men tried to force the female BCL leader out of the office in the afternoon.
Mahbuba Rahman Shifu, women's affairs secretary of Chittagong city unit BCL, at the press conference said immediate past BCL President Liaqat Sikdar threatened to kill her over phone.
Shifu said Liaqat is repeatedly threatening her over phone not to disclose his 'evil deeds'.
She sought cooperation of all concerned to ensure her security.
When contacted Liaqat said, "The allegation is false and baseless, and the press conference was called to tarnish my image".
He said he had no special relationship with Shifu.
Meanwhile, DUJA brought out a silent procession on the campus and submitted a memorandum to the vice-chancellor demanding punishment to the persons responsible for the incident.
DUJA members demanded immediate academic and organisational measures against them.
BCL President Mahmud Hasan Ripon expressed sorrow for the untoward incident and told The Daily Star that action will be taken against them.
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student wing of ruling BNP, and its DU unit, Jagannath University unit, and Dhaka City unit condemned the incident and demanded punishment to the responsible 'cadres' of BCL.
