A report detailing press freedom violations counted 136 accounts of harassment, imprisonment, censorship and murder, among others, for 2005. The Federation of Arab Journalists (FAJ) published the report, noting that the numbers are most likely an underestimate.

FAJ released the report June 2 at a press conference in Cairo, Egypt. The syndicate based their findings on reports sent to them by member journalism organizations around the Arab World, many of which are highly censored by their governments. 

According to the report, Iraq is the worst country for press freedom in the region. Kuwait was ranked highest in terms of press freedom, followed by Jordan and Egypt.
The 90-page report counted 28,025 working journalists in 16 Arab states and 2,674 newspapers in 17 Arab countries. The report counted 25 deaths of journalists, 22 of which were in Iraq.
FAJ did not receive any reports from Libya or Mauritania.
