I&B Ministry seeks cabinet approval for new broadcast bill
Information & Broadcasting Ministry seeks for cabinet approval for a new broadcast bill. The new bill proposes the Broadcast Regulatory Authority, cable operators, MSOs to operate on license from the broadcast regulator.
The bill also proposes foreign channels to have at least 15% of local content. All channels must have at least 10% public service content / advertising, while cross media ownership is to be restricted.
The bill also proposes that no broadcast service provider will hold more than 20% equity in another and not own more than 15% of the country's channels.
It also says that no broadcast service provider should have more than 15% subscribers. Live sports feeds, except international tests, are to be shared with Prasar Bharati.
