IANS staffer shortlisted for Indian sports award

Mumbai, Aug 5 (IANS) Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) sports editor
Qaiser Mohammad Ali is among the three shortlisted candidates in the
'Best of News Agencies' category for the Tata Indian Sports Journalism
Awards 2006.


The other two journalists are AFP sports editor Kuldip Lal and his
colleague C. Rajshekhar Rao, the Sports Journalists' Federation of
India (SJFI) said in a statement here Saturday.

The awards will be announced and presented in Mumbai Thursday.

The SJFI appointed a distinguished panel of judges in different
categories. A record number of entries were received for the English
category from all over the country and 300 images - another record --
for the photography awards, SJFI said.

The panel of judges for English comprised V.K. Karthika, executive
editor of Penguin Books India, Mukul Kesavan, teacher at Jamia Milia
Islamia in New Delhi, and Joy Bhattacharya, senior vice-president
(programming) of the National Geographic and The History Channel.

Sharda Ugra of India Today (New Delhi) is the only nominee for the
Indian Sports Writer of the Year Award in the magazine category and is
assured of the prize.

Hindustan Times' Kadambari Murali (New Delhi) and Dhiman Sarkar
(Kolkata) have been nominated for the Indian Sports Writer of the Year
in the newspaper category.

The assessment of the photography awards was conducted at the Press
Club, Mumbai, Saturday by an eminent panel consisting of Mehlli
Gobhai, educated at Royal College of Art, London, Mahendra Singh, a
well-known Bombay-based photographer whose work has appeared
internationally, and Ranjit Hoskote, an art critic, poet and
independent curator.
