Saturday March 10, 02:01 AM
WOMEN journalists today called for the strengthening of female
participation in mainstream journalism for highlighting the problems,
especially social ones in a better way. These observations were made
at a seminar on Role of Women in Media organised by Indian Media
Centre in collaboration with Punjab Union of Journalists and Hindi
Department of SCD Government College here today. In her keynote
address, Shaina Khan, Senior Correspondent, All India Radio, Delhi,
said, "Today there is an urgent need to involve women in print as well
as electronic media which could help them highlight their problems
such as domestic violence and female foeticide in an effective
manner." She shared her experiences in broadcast journalism. She said
women in general are still unable to find the deserving place in any
sphere of life in the male-dominated society. "Men have always led
society and they have never allowed women to come forward anywhere,
which is unfortunate," she said. Renuka Nayyar, Assistant Editor,
Dainik Tribune, shared her experience in journalism with the
gathering. "Even as time has changed, men's mentality is the same.
Women still have to prove their worth in any field," she said. Rita
Sharma, a senior journalist from electronic media, also spoke on the
occasion. Speaking on the occasion, Tourism Minister Hira Singh Gabria
lauded the role of women in scaling new heights in journalism. He
stressed on providing higher education to women to change the overall
scenario in the male-dominated society. MLA Harish Rai Dhanda also
appreciated the role of women journalists. Media Centre secretary
Ashok Singhi, PUJ president Dr H.S. Lall and SBI Manager N.K. Gosain
also spoke on the occasion. City-based women journalists were also
honoured.
