BANGALORE, June 25: The IT capital today got its maiden community
radio station. Launched under the guidance of the Commonwealth
Educational Media Centre for Asia, the station has been set up by the
Jain Group of Institutions. Called Radio Active, the station will be
run by its journalism students with a host of NGOs and related bodies,
with assistance from professional units.
For the state, this would be the second such facility, with the
agriculture university, Dharwad, running one effectively. This would
be the 26th community radio station in the country with Tamil Nadu
walking away with 11, closely followed by Delhi at four. Maharashtra,
Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan have two each.
If all goes well, Bangalore could well have seven more in the days to
come as institutions like the National Law College, Bangalore
University, Ramana Maharishi Academy for the Blind and other colleges
are said to have got licences to run a community radio station.
Radio Active will initially broadcast for eight hours daily, spread
over four hours each, starting at 6 am. The repeat broadcasts will be
from 6 in the evening to 10 at night.
According to Mr Sreedher, director of CEMCA, Jadavpur University in
West Bengal, too, received a letter of intent recently for starting a
community radio station.
Mr Karthik P, member, journalism faculty of the Sri Bhagwan Mahaveer
Jain College, centre for management studies, said the community
station will focus on issues relating to health, environment,
