Bangladesh ponders opening of community radio sector
03/08/2007 In Bangladesh, where state-owned radio dominates the airwaves, a ministerial committee plans to submit proposed regulations that would allow community stations on the air, local NGOs report. According to the Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC), various groups, intellectuals and journalists have been advocating laws that would be friendlier to community radio. On July 23, at a meeting organized by the Ministry of Information, officials said they were exploring ways to launch community radio stations on a pilot basis. A successful pilot project could lead to allowing independent stations on a more permanent basis. For more information: http://www.bnnrc.net/.
