The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with SDC (Swiss Development Cooperation) is organizing a Media Workshop to sensitise South and South East Asian journalists to the human impact of Climate Change. Journalists from the following countries are entitled to apply to attend the workshop: China, Nepal, Malaysia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and India.
The South Asia Water & Sanitation Programme is sponsoring participants from Pakistan and Bangladesh. The Workshop will be held at the Manesar Heritage Resort, about an hour outside New Delhi, from 29-31 October 2007. This year's UNDP Human Development Report (HDR) looks at the impact that Climate Change will have on poor and vulnerable communities. As you will be aware as a journalist who covers Climate Change, there is a renewed focus in the media throughout the world with the release of the Reports of the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) over the past few months. The aim of this Media Workshop is to create a pool of well informed reporters in selected Asian countries who would be able to report on the findings of this year's HDR when UNDP launches it at the end of November 2007 – the global launch is in Brazil on 27 November 2007. We would also offer this select group of reporters early access to HDR 2007 materials, but these will strictly be subject to a publication embargo. A concept note on the Workshop and the tentative Agenda is attached. We invite journalists to apply to attend the workshop. Kindly send a two-page CV and scanned files of at least two print articles (if they are in languages other than English, kindly send a synopsis of each, clearly citing the publication and date of publication) . Journalists working on the electronic media should send a treatment/synopsis of the story/feature, also citing exact broadcast/telecast dates. The Workshop will be conducted in English and while we welcome journalists working in local language publications/ channels they should be proficient in English. All airfares, travel within India, accommodation and meals will be covered by the organisers. UNDP and SDC are organizing two short field trips in India before the workshop, where participants will be able to learn about the human impact of Climate Change first-hand and strategies adopted to cope with the impact. Selected participants are invited to apply for either of these trips, details of which will be sent after a journalist is selected.
