Women tune in for some health and nutrition tips

Staff Reporter
CHENNAI: Health and nutrition tips for women will soon be delivered in
bite-sized nuggets through M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women's community
radio. For a radius of 15 km around the college in Nungambakkam, women can
tune into M.O.P. FM 107.8 starting Thursday at 9.30 a.m. for a daily
broadcast of 'Pennae Nee Arivai'.
The project, initiated by the National Council for Science and Technology
Communication, New Delhi, with the assistance of the Commonwealth
Educational Media Centre for Asia, is an attempt to improve knowledge of
health and nutrition among women.
Inaugurating the project here on Monday, Social Welfare Minister Poongothai
Aladi Aruna said while the country was producing female doctors and
engineers in large numbers, it still had a large number of malnourished
children and maternal deaths during childbirth.
Girija, a representative of the community that the women from the college
have worked with, expressed her gratitude to the students for taking time
off during weekends to explain the need for hygienic and healthy practices,
especially to children and pregnant women.
R. Sreedher, Director of the Commonwealth Centre, said that more than Rs.2
crore had been allotted for the project nationally and that 13 centres,
including five in Tamil Nadu, would be using community radio to transmit
knowledge of health and nutrition to women across the country.
A government order was passed this week allowing those running the radio
programme to seek advertising for five minutes during the 15 to 20 minute
programme.
Grant
The community radio has been given a grant of over Rs.10 lakh, said Ujjwala
Tirkey of the council, PSO/Scientist, Department of Science and Technology.
Usha Ravi, dean, Academics, and project coordinator at the college, said the
project aimed to ensure that the benefits of science flowed equally to men
and women. Besides transmitting the programme, students would also interact
with women in areas close to the college through discussions, street plays
and health camps.
