Bhutan's first daily debuts

3 November, 2008 - The information and communication minister, Lyonpo
Nandalal Rai, said that the government was ready to support free media
as he launched the country's first daily newspaper, Bhutan Today, on
October 30.

"Democracy means responsibility and journalists have an important role
to play in making democracy to success," said the minister.

The eight-paged morning daily is a newspaper written in simple English
covering all sections of life to cater to all audiences, said the
daily's managing editor, K B Lama.

"The language of the paper is made so simple that a person who know
basic English can easily understand the content," he said. Being a
daily, he said, the newspaper will have a greater advantage over other
papers when it comes to urgency and news breaking. "Bhutan Today was
not to compete with other bi-weekly and weekly papers, but to
complement each other. And we'll survive," he said.

The management of Bhutan Today said that their sole objective was to
keep the Bhutanese people informed continuously and provide choice of
communication. "We're very confident about our timing on circulation
and the paper quality is environment friendly," said one of the
editors.

Bhutan Today has a bureau correspondent in Bumthang, Gelephu, Mongar
and Phuentsholing and eight reporters in the capital.
