357 private TV channels uplink from India December 25th, 2008 - 11:57 UTC by Andy Sennitt A total of 357 private television channels have been uplinked up to the end of 2008, including as many as 197 news channels. According to a year-end review of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, the country at present has a total of 450 channels including 417 private channels and 33 Doordarshan and Parliamentary channels. Of the uplinked channels, a total of 160 are non-news and current affairs channels. A total of 60 channels including 13 news channels have been given permission to downlink into the country, the remaining being non-news and current affairs channels. Meanwhile, the state-of-art Electric Media Monitoring Centre (EMMC), set up with effect from 9 June this year to continuously record the broadcast signals being received in India, is monitoring 100 TV channels to be begin with and will upgrade to 300 TV channels during the current financial year.
