EC slaps notices on Congress, Saakshi TV

Special Correspondent

For telecast of ad depicting alleged back-stabbing of NTR by Naidu

HYDERABAD: The Election Commission cracked the whip on the Congress
party and Saakshi TV channel for telecasting an advertisement
depicting the alleged back-stabbing of NTR by his son-in-law and
Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu.

The State-level three-member screening committee, formed by the
Commission to scrutinise and issue certification to advertisements of
political parties, served notices to both of them. The ad graphically
tried to project Mr. Naidu who politically backstabbed NTR and, once
in the saddle, began worshipping him.

After ascertaining the facts from additional chief electoral officer
Harpreeth Singh, who heads the committee, Chief Electoral Officer I.
V. Subba Rao ordered booking of a case against the Congress party and
the private channel. He said the ad was “unauthorised”.

Mr. Singh said the committee had cleared 31 out of the 33
advertisement video skits submitted by political parties for use
during their campaign.

Of them, 18 belonged to the Congress, and five each to the Telugu
Desam, Praja Rajyam and Lok Satta.

Following complaints, the CEO asked the AP Housing Development
Corporation officials to stop construction of new houses if the
beneficiaries were identified after March 2 when the model code came
into force.

There was no bar on regular promotions effected through departmental
promotion committees, he clarified.

No violation

Mr. Subba Rao said Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s criticism
of the Telugu Desam Party’s manifesto during his press conference in
the Secretariat premises last week did not appear to be a violation of
the election code.
