Hope in Indian Diaspora for West Bengal media industry

Kolkata, July 25 : The fledgling media and entertainment industry in
eastern India is slowly beginning to make its mark on the global
stage.

A number of companies engaged in technological innovations, finance
and film distribution of Indian origin, especially from USA and the
UK, are keen to invest in the media and entertainment sector in the
East.

The seed of inspiration was perhaps sown with the success of '
Padakhep ,' a film made by Suman Ghosh who in between his lectures as
professor in Economics at the Miami University managed to not only win
acclaim in India but distributed it successfully to the overseas
Bengali audience. Ghosh's success soon brought other producers to him.

Thus, was born, 'Dwando' another film made in Bengali language being
produced by another member of the Bengali diaspora in the US, Oney
Seal. A number of investment and finance companies are also showing
interest in producing and marketing Bengali and other regional films
which have audiences all over the world. The fact of the matter is a
number of NRIs in USA and the UK are evincing a keen interest in
investing in the entertainment sector in West Bengal.

The WB IT minister, Debesh Das was quite hopeful of this sector
opening the floodgates to foreign investment given the close connect
between technological innovation and media and entertainment.

Speaking at a seminar 'WB – The Melting Pot for Technology, Media and
Entertainment' in Kolkata on Friday organized by the Indo-American
Chamber of Commerce (IACC), the state minister said that very good
opportunities for investment in the media and entertainment sector was
present because of the huge reservoir of talent in the eastern region.
Complimenting IAAC's event as timely, Das said the government was
doing everything possible to harness this talent and create
opportunities for growth of the media and entertainment industry in
the state.

Das hoped that forums like these would help bring investment into the state.

National President of IACC S K Jain said that the 'blend of art and
craft' was deep rooted in the psyche of the state, qualities which
honed with care, can catapult the region to a new high in the field of
media and entertainment.

He said that IACC was actively involved in a number of very important
programs in USA where it is attempting to bring the overseas
investment and Indian talent together. 'We are also organizing our own
events in USA to woo investors', Mr Jain said.

Souryo Mandal, the eastern region president of IACC while introducing
the seminar to the visiting delegates and guests the M&E sector in the
state had seen a lot of activity in recent years.

A number of new TV channels have sprouted, besides the advent of a
number of national companies in the field of film production and
distribution such as Zee, Adlabs, Saregama Planman, Databazaar to dot
the state's horizon with hope.
