Journos subjected to repression by powerful coteries: SAFMA UNB, Dhaka Journalists are subjected to repression and persecution by powerful groups and coteries within and outside the government in Bangladesh, said a survey report. South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) in association with Media Commission, Bangladesh (MCB) conducted the survey on South Asia Media Monitoring-2009 and launched the report at the National Press Club Tuesday. MCB president Mizanur Rahman Shelley presented the report. Editor of the Daily Independent Mahbubul Alam spoke on the occasion as chief guest. "…the restrictions and obstacles carried over from the past still haunt the media in Bangladesh…Members of the government agencies, including security forces and other agencies, militant and terrorist organizations, associate organizations of the ruling as well as opposition parties carried on repressing and persecuting journalists," the survey report says. About government advertisements, it says, "Though there are set rules and regulations on the distribution of government advertisements, the ruling quarters can and do use these at will to reward those who are loyal to them and deprive those who behave otherwise." The report says the objective and independent treatment of news and analyses are suffering following these rules and regulations of advertisement distribution. The report also says that the media institutions cannot pay and train their professionals well due to scarcity of financial resources. "Government control is also prominent in granting permission and license to new media entities," says the report. President of National Press Club Shaukat Mahmud and ATN news editor Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, Amardesh editor Mahmudur Rahman and journalists, among others, were present at function. The speakers stressed the need for a modern broadcasting policy to ensure media's independent and objectivity. They said the journalists should not be defined through labour law like other labourers. ------------------------------------ -- INFORMATION OVERLOAD?
