Dear Keith,

I think I am condemned to be stuck with this today! Definitely
exhausting, but I will try to respond to a couple of the insightful
comments that you made. I agree with you when you say that the triad
of book/idiot-box/hypertext is a limiting one. It is Moulthrop's triad
and there is no reason for us to accept what he says as gospel.

The point that Vivek and you raise about the Anglophone nature of such
groups is something that I had discussed in passing in an earlier
post* and will take up in more detail in forthcoming ones. Moreover,
the issue of where poets are from, territorially speaking, is one of
the seminal themes of my research and will occupy a lot of space in
future discussions.

Regards,

Nitoo.

[*Reply to a query by Rahul Asthana, dated, 1st February, 2005: You
are right. English is the language of the net and I have felt the
inconveniences of having to use the Roman script for words which are
in Assamese or Hindi in the 'original' handwritten versions. Even if I
have the fonts required for the words, and manage to paste them onto
the pop-up, the reader would not see those words. It will seem like a
lot of gobbledygook to her because, a) since she doesn't have the font
installed on her computer, the words will appear on her screen as
meaningless symbols and b) because she would not understand the
references anyway…font or no font. I am still trying to work out what
this can mean, good or bad; I have no idea. You have to remember that
you, as Rahul Asthana, may not understand the Assamese references
either; whereas, my hypothetical cyberreader will have the benefit of
what I have come to call, "the instant annotative link". ]
