A Ladder to Heaven ------------------ Back in the village I used to think Bombay is a ladder to heaven Back in the village I used to think Bombay is a boat-ride in dream lakes Do the dwellings in heaven resemble these mud walls and tin roofs Only now I realize that this is neither heaven nor a dream lake In the Bombay that never sleeps I work during nights In the Bombay that is never awake she works during the day The result of our ten years� golden dreams Mud walls and a tin roof full of holes Alas Even those will be no longer there tomorrow But They say After a few years Bombay will be heavenly >From the same place where these mud walls stand planes will fly in the skies to other heavenly places Only tonight I may see the moon beams and the twinkling stars Through the holes of the tin roof But Tomorrow The bulldozers arrive to level the mud walls and the tin roofs The heavenly dreams will melt like a piece of camphor We will move back But India moves forward Always forward
