between you and me
is physics
you, earthbound,
gravitating to mossy stones
contrarian me,
willingly wooed by the wind
Between you and me
is not our different beliefs
is not our different traditions
is not our different professional disciplines
is not our different rhythms of sleep and rest
For mutual regard dissolved all such differences
Between you and me
is a line;
a ridiculous line,
drawn arbitrarily on a 2D map,
by someone following higher orders,
sitting in a continent different from ours.
And now tracing that imaginary line
are real barbed wire fences, with
uniformed guards gating passage;
restraining you to your side,
me to mine; harassing us
with endless forms-
trite declarations
of loyalties
to one god
or the other,
to one norm
or the other-
branding us like cattle,
with stamps of ownership
Between you and me
is a line
slicing through
our bound lives.
We must erase it.
