For those who haven't read it, here is Lorca's luminous half-poem- half essay on the Duende, an essential primer for both the writing and the performance of poetry: http://www.musicpsyche.org/Lorca-Duende.htm (unfortunately the translator of this particular version is not mentioned.)
A relevant excerpt from the essay below; what is important is his injunction to go beyond form. Lorca is talking about a famous gypsy singer. But the interesting hidden paradox here is that to go beyond form, to get to its marrow, one has to first master form, as Lorca did. That is the heart, for me, of how to make a real poem: to develop a fluency, and then to go further and learn how to fight against, resist one's own fluency, and become vulnerable again... "The "Girl with the Combs" had to mangle her voice because she knew there were discriminating folk about who asked not for form, but for the marrow of form - pure music spare enough to keep itself in the air. She had to deny her faculties and her security; that is to say, to turn out her Muse and keep vulnerable, so that her Duende might come and vouchsafe the hand-to-hand struggle. And then how she sang!" -- You are encouraged to post poetry, respond critically to the poems circulated and participate in discussions.
