After reading "Family" I was prompted to send this poem, written after I had sorted out hundreds of thousands of family photographs...some that I could not name were the most intriguing.
Jane
ALBUM
Those faded young faces
Looking out at us:
Chubby children.
Thin teenagers.
Solemn faces in sepia.
A young couple
Flanked by stern proud parents,
Solemn after their wedding,
As yet unconsummated.
Later
Children are added to the picture:
A blank-eyed infant
Sits in his motherÂ’s lap.
His parents stare sternly
At the camera, forbidding
A candid picture.
A child sits holding hands
Gravely, with a sibling.
The photographerÂ’s backdrop
Frames their serious faces.
First day in school,
Then, the last day in uniform.
Graduation day, still solemn.
We have come full circle,
Recording the wedding day
Of our young man,
With his new wife.
They stare out, unsmiling,
At their unconsummated future.
