To be honest, I thought I had posted it...maybe I forgot to include the zestpoets id. Doing it now...
Glad you like the poem, it's one of my favourites, eerie though it is. Thanks for the appreciation.
Working on a new collection of erotic poems which are more fun, in a way, but less poetic. They need naughty little drawings, or sensuous photo-images...not sure if it will ever get published.

Hello Jane,
This is such a cool, cool poem! The imagery is wonderful, I felt i was there myslef, looking into a dark wet well...The feeling of mystery and fear is quite over powering...the last lines seem so ominous!......why haven't you posted this on Zest?...
And yes children usually find wells a bit scary...i did too...sometimes i still do...especially when i cannot see the bottom of the well.....it gives me the creeps then.
Thankyou,
Farah.

'Listening' reminded me of this poem I wrote about four years ago. it combines childhood memories with those of a later date. Oddly, children don't like it much, perhaps because of its hint of something nasty at the bottom of the well.

DEEP WELL

Deep well, fern-furred,

Reflects the distant sky

Like a silver salver.

We children looking down

Saw our several heads

Black and sharply drawn,

Arranged on the salver:

A bloodless beheading.

Someone dropped a stone,

And Salome danced away

And took our heads with her,

Left the frightened sky

Shivering in the green dark.

Looking into a well

With my small daughter,

Thin branches laced the water:

Our disembodied heads

Caught up in their net

Until a frog stone-skipped

Across the bright water, made

Overlapping rings instead,

And the falling splash

Pulled more sky

Down into the well.

And afterwards

We heard the splash

Climbing back up the well.
