--- Begin Message ---To require the poet to tell us what "it is filled" with is to ask for the poem to become prose, in my humble opinion; whether the filling is light cream or heavy custard is up to the poet's culinary choice. If you don't like the pastry, visit another confectioner or bake it yourself. You might have written a poem as a response to demonstrate how SNOBS could have been better.Look man, you dont have the right to make the kind of statements like the ones you have made above. You are not going to decide whether my observations are flippant or profound. And if you are one who treats poetry like some sacred text which doesnt need alterations but needs alterations in the poets mind you can keep that opinion to yourself. You are nobody to tell me how to treat a poem, I will decide that for myself. If I commented on your poem you could have said something like this, but I was speaking to someone who is here to improve her craft, and I suggested that she could have written a better one. I believe most of us are here to improve ourselves and so we believe in sharing our honest opinions about what we feel about certain poems, but if you are here just to engage in mutual flattery and treat poem like some unalterable sacred text you are free to do so, but you cant tell others what to do. You better keep your epiphanies restricted to your poems. I am not here to indulge in a verbal duel with you. If I am not satisfied with a poem I will tell the poet why I am not satisfied with it. We believe that our interactions here will result in creative growth. Nobody stops you from trumpeting, but when you stop doing even that and start interfering with the real job of sharing honest opinions, thats when you become irritating. I dont want this to continue. You do your job and let me do mine.Ankur.
M Suri <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:As Freud reportedly said, "Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar." I did read Farah's explanation. If you also read what Farah wrote as a brief introduction, then you would know that it was a "funny, moody poem" and thus not filled with hate, as the sentiment you wished to ascribe to it. One's perception of a work of art and one's reaction to it are individual. However, I felt your initial comments about Farah's poem a tad flippant and denigrating . That is what prompted me to respond to your criticism. Perhaps, the rage you expected from SNOBS was insuffuicient to tap into your personal passion. You might have written a poem as a response to demonstrate how SNOBS could have been better.A poem is generally not as direct as prose, as I'm sure you know. It relies on metaphor and leaps of imagination on the part of the auditor/reader. To require the poet to tell us what "it is filled" with is to ask for the poem to become prose, in my humble opinion; whether the filling is light cream or heavy custard is up to the poet's culinary choice. If you don't like the pastry, visit another confectioner or bake it yourself. As for the part in my comments about antennae, well, think about it. An epiphany doesn't come with blue prints and detailed drawings. It wasn't I who was trying to impose my preferences on others, dear Ankur. Indeed, it was you who wasn't satisfied that the poet did not give you an obvious answer about the poem as to what it is "filled with."Regards,Well, thats too simple an explanation for a poem dont
you think. I need not write a poem to say that a
snob's head is filled with pride. You must read the
explanation given by Farah. When you hate some people
passionately enough to write a poem on them you make
sure the passion is conveyed. But I felt the extra
punch missing, thats why I felt he could write a
better one. I missed the antennae part, it would be
nice it if you could be a bit more direct and
straighforward. As a poet I understand the anbition of
the person writing poetry, thats why I expect more. An
obvious reading of the poetry is not what is expected
of a creativce reader, but if you are satisfied with
that you have no right impose that on everyone else.
