EXPRESS TRAIN
The sun is low in the sky, polishes
The rail-bridge across the river,
Reflected in water calm and smooth.
We drift along the platform
And pick up speed,
I wave goodbye to you.
My last sight of you, gazing wistfully,
Waving and waving, drowning in love
I cannot return. The train speeds up.
I am carried inexorably away.
I cannot see you, left standing
On the platform, waving at me
Until the train has gone, waving,
Still waving at the vanishing speck.
Another train rolls in,
And I am not on it.
The river has gone. The flat plain
Extends to the hem of the hills.
We cross more signals.
Light fades from the sky.
I do not know if I will return.
