Katrina
Katrina blew into town,
A hurricane,
High fives!
All aground,
Blew the South down,
Drowning it,
The strange gumbo
Of death, disease,
Oily decadence,
Smelled rank
In putrid, dank waters
Washing through
Streets and attics,
Clasping corpses
In the cutting embrace
Of deaths sickle.
The jazz died,
The levees cleaved,
Wet, soggy,
The saints went slogging out
through the floods
Leaving ghosts in old neighborhoods.
The notes are sour for now;
Will the new South rise and then
Blow the sax, trumpet, pound the honky-tonk,
Let the good times roll
For ALL?
Will ALL the saints ever
Come marching home?
