ONE DEEPAVALI Three weeks before Deepavali, mother started with the roll cap nudging her toe she managed with out the play gun and made endless lists of crackers starting from finger bursting to a garland.
I kept my distance. Enough for me the light emitting ones the sound bursting startled the life out of me but like a show man she did it `Watch me ` ,she said , as if ,it was also mother role. That evening in the Manacaud house It was the thousand chain thundering one. She lit it --the embers flickered and faded so she prodded it and it reacted with enthusiasm, she turned and ran but her sari twined in thorns of a rose bush. Her arm was smoking when we rushed her to the doctors , but all she said was , Tomorrow I must go back for the gunpowder those passive ones, and make my own home made cracker.
