There's no reason at all why you can't do this. The only thing preventing most 
file systems from taking advantage of “adjustable” replication is that they 
don’t have the integrated volume management capabilities that ZFS does.

ZFS already allows its storage pools to contain multiple types of block storage 
(striped, mirrored, RAID, etc.). It’s not much of a stretch to imagine being 
able to assign, on either a per-filesystem or per-file basis, attributes that 
would control which of those types a particular file could be stored on. We 
probably won’t see this soon, but the future is bright!
