I'm not sure I understand what you might miss here.  Normally you'd ask
your application to make itself consistent, take a snapshot, then when
the snapshot was complete you'd notify the application that it was free
to do whatever it did normally.

What would being able to lock the FS accomplish for you?

Not that I'm aware of, but I haven't looked.
