a nit, but I've never foudn fsck alone useful for this. Maybe for ``a filesystem trashed by bad RAM/CPU/bugs'' it is useful, but for a physically bad disk I've always had to use dd_rescue or 'dd bs=512 conv=noerror,sync' onto a good disk before pulling out the fsck.
