I should mention that since this is a bit risky, it would be wise for Harry to post the procedure and commands he plans to use so that other eyes can verify that a correct result will be obtained.
There is more risk of configuring the pool incorrectly (e.g. failing to end up with mirror vdevs) than there is of losing data.
