The arrays are housed in cabinets of this type <http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005GYDMYG/> (one each).
Each cabinet is connected directly to a dedicated USB 3-port on the Mac Mini. The Mini itself is a quad core i7, running the latest version of Mac OS X. I'm surprised that the cables failed in such rapid succession. They came with the cabinets, which are 0, 1 and 2 years old respectively.
