Data Modeler Job Description and Responsibilities

The data modeler is necessary to provide context for the definitions,
ensure naming conventions are followed and definition guidelines are
adhered to.  Data modelers are uniquely qualified to develop the names
and participate in the development of the definitions

•The data modeler's responsibilities include the design and
construction of the logical data models and meta data (entity and
attribute descriptions). This responsibility includes the
identification of data most valuable to BANK, the integration of this
data, and the development of correlating logical data models. The
resulting logical data models will be based on the application of data
management design principles and BANK database standards and is the
first step prior to the design of the physical data model which is
created by the data architect and development DBA’s.
•The modeler collaborates with various members of the project teams to
include client representatives, business analysts and technical staff
to understand the business requirements and data changes associated to
the project.  While working on projects the modeler will be proactive
and solicit, understand and communicate views on information issues
related to data and raise issues with team members in a constructive
manner.   The modeler will work closely with the Database Architect
and the DBA’s on the project team.
•The data modeler will use a modeling tool such as ERStudio or Erwin
for the construction of the logical data model and meta data.
•The data modeler will have modeling experience for data warehouses.
The data modeler must fully understand dimensional and third normal
form modeling.
•The data modeler will commit to understand information architecture
concepts and principles, and the use of data management best practices
and tools, including those to support data modeling and metadata
•The data modeler is responsible for the maintenance of the logical
models and the synchronization of the logical model with the
production environment.  The logical data modeler will ensure the meta
data is synchronized with the:
o             Production data sources
o             Business rules governing data acquisition
o             Business rules for data access
o             Business definitions of the data
o             New applications under development
o             Skills and Attributes
•The data modeler will adhere to the Data Model Management Process for
•The data modeler will ensure alignment to the Enterprise Logical Data
Model which represents the data requirements of the enterprise as a
•The data modeler will provide access to the meta data and data
management architecture and respond to any ad hoc requests for such
data.  The data modeler will provide requesting groups with
information relating to data models and conduct meetings to promote
communication among different project interdepencies relating to data
model management
•The data modeler must have excellent communication skills to work
with the business/technical end users and business analysts as well as
excellent presentation skills, both verbal and written.
•The data modeler will have strong analytical and problem solving
