I try to switch sets every couple years. It forces me to learn new things. However, prior to dumping (or rather, giving my old set to a family member), I'll go through it and find the verses and ideas I've marked in it, and put them in a notebook I have. Then, I still have them to refer back to.
I'm in my second year of the current set. I figure they are good for about another 7-8 months, then I gotta ditch 'em. I agree it is hard to let go in some ways, but in other ways it really is an exciting thing to rework all those things you used to take for granted.
