When I was there 20-some years ago on my mission, we had an elder that
split a tooth. The pain was severe for him, but they didn't have the
technology to fix it down there (only could pull it). Since he was going
home in a month, the dentist told him to chew coca leaves for the pain,
until he could get home and have it fixed properly. So we had an elder
walking around with a chaw of coca leaves in his lip, telling others
about the word of wisdom!

Marc: It's
interesting that Bolivian Indians chew coca leaves and it's only a mild
stimulant
-- it took Western chemistry to distill cocaine out of it and turn it
into
something truly dangerous.
