Thrift: We buy new cars at the end of the model year, for cash. No car payments. We drive them until they die. My 1997 Chrysler Town and Country MiniVan ($28K new) has 175,000+ miles, with no major work (water pump, brakes, minor things). I think that this is because a lot of the miles are put on for Scouts, and a bunch driving out to SLC for the LDS Booksellers Convention a few times.
If the engine dies, there's the Engine Exchange. Same for the transmission (175,000 miles on a Chrysler MV transmission, and still going strong? - Clearly divine intervention!).
