The crisis of faith is not a modern-day phenomenon. During the American
Civil War era, circa 1860, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow composed the poem
that is the basis for the Christmas hymn, "I Heard the Bells on
Christmas Day".

One of finest lines in his poetry --

"...for hate is strong and mocks the song of peace on earth, good will
to men. Then pealed the bells more loud and deep, God is not dead, nor
doth he sleep".

Reportedly Longfellow wrote these words of affirmation in response to a
challenge to his own personal faith and witness of the living God.
