Second Announcement
AGRI-BIOCHE 2001
The 5th Symposium on Agricultural Sciences and
Biochemical Engineering 2001 (SAB 2001)
Jointly hosted by IASA and Graduate School of
Agricultural and Life Sciences, The University of
Tokyo

INTRODUCTION
Symposium on Agricultural Sciences and Biochemical
Engineering is organized annually by Indonesian
Agricultural Sciences Assocation (IASA). The first,
2nd and 3rd symposium were held in Tokyo in 1997,
1998, and 1999, respectively. The 4th symposium was
held in Chiba in March 2000. The symposium have been
significantly proved to be an effective way to
exchange scientific information between agricultural
and biochemical engineering scientists.

The ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) has been set to be
realized by the year 2002, six years ahead of the
original schedule of 2008. While ASEAN is now closer
to the realisation of a free trade area, there remain
a number of critical issues among the member countries
to make AFTA truly a success. ASEAN need to
participate more fully and actively in global
multilateral trade negotiations and formulate common
policies and positions to better protect the region's
interests.

Thus, the theme of the 5th SAB 2001 symposium is
related to AFTA and expected to further beneficiary as
a forum to explore and discuss various topics relating
to the readiness of agricultural and biochemical
sectors to face the ASEAN Free Trade Area. In
addition, specific topics related to IASA, such as
forestry, fisheries, marine science, husbandary, etc.
also will be coverred in the symposium. It is also
expected that this symposium would yield some
alternative solution to the theme of this symposium.

Theme
The theme of this symposium: "Can Agricultural
Sciences and Biochemical
Engineering Sectors Save Us in Facing ASEAN Free Trade
Area ?"

Objective
The main objective of the symposium is to provide a
forum for interaction among scientists who are
interested in Agricultural sciences and biochemical
engineering through exchanges of information, issues,
research, and policies related to the theme.

DATE AND VENUE
The symposium will be held on March 11, 2001, from
09:30 to 17:00 at Ichijo Hall, Graduate School of
Agricultural and Life Sciences, The University of
Tokyo, Hongo Campus, Tokyo, Japan.
