I agree that's a good idea, but all I'm talking about is the simple case
of sorting strings, in which python's current implementation isn't very
helpful and I don't see any situation where sorting:

Andrew
David
Wayne
bart
sophie

is better than sorting:

Andrew
bart
David
sophie
Wayne
