:( I was hoping against hope that this wouldn't be the answer ... I think that the hard limit onSolaris must be 256, because ulimit -n 200 seems to have the appropriate effect of making Zope complain about "too many open files" ... but anything higher than 256 gets a "File not found" ...
Let's try this from another angle ... why does Zope need to open so many files just to process a *large-but-not-really-large* POST? Can I change something about the way the form is set up (I use a lot of ":records") to circumvent the problem?
