As a side note, PostgreSQL 8.3 has a native XML column type. It's fairly
basic still, but you can create indexes based on xpath queries.

Jup. Postgres already had in version 7 XML support as an add-on...but pretty much unusable for the production and the functionality of the XML type in Postgres 8 looks similarly (feature-wise).
