That was necessary. z3c.form trunk (what will probably be 2.0) comes with a new widget (MultiWidget) for this use-case. It's described in http://svn.zope.org/z3c.form/trunk/src/z3c/form/browser/README.txt?rev=93531&view=markup The UIs look similar.
